Common questions

Medicare questions, answered simply

Our caseworkers hear these every day. Here are the most common ones.

There is no cost to you — ever. The Salvation Army's licensed caseworkers receive a commission from insurance carriers when you enroll in a plan. This is regulated by CMS (the federal Medicare agency) and does not affect your premium or benefits in any way.
You can enroll during your Initial Enrollment Period (the 7-month window around your 65th birthday), the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7 each year), or during a Special Enrollment Period if you qualify. Our caseworkers will confirm your exact window.
Yes. If you have limited income and resources, you may qualify for Extra Help with prescription costs, Medicare Savings Programs (MSPs) that pay your Part B premium, or Medicaid dual-eligibility. Our caseworkers screen for all of these at no charge.
All enrollment assistance follows strict HIPAA regulations. Your personal and health information is kept confidential, stored on HIPAA-compliant systems, and never sold. The Salvation Army is bound by CMS compliance standards for Medicare brokers.
Absolutely. We serve Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, and Montana — including rural communities. Phone enrollment is available statewide, and if you can travel to a Corps location, we can arrange a free Lyft ride through the 211 system.
Original Medicare (Parts A & B) is the government program covering hospital and medical services. Medicare Advantage (Part C) is offered by private insurers approved by CMS — it bundles your coverage, often adds dental/vision/hearing, and frequently has a $0 monthly premium. Our caseworkers will walk you through which makes more sense for your situation.
